There's a real unmet demand for sex in film that isn't funny. That's actually hard to do, which is why so much porn is funny even when it accomplishes what it's there for. A guy hitting or choking a girl isn't funny, so it becomes a shortcut to "real" even when it's utterly fake

I think you’re right, a big part of that might be that sex isn’t sexy often. It’s messy and emotional or boring, and you need to negotiate that with a narrative arc. Books do it well, The Pisces by
@melissabroder is a good example off the top of my head

watched Casablanca recently and it captured a lot of the messy, emotional, moving aspects of sex, eroticism, and relationships...without ever addressing the subject in explicit words

not to be all "R E T V R N" but there was an artistry around the topic that is just missing from a lot of the media I've been exposed to frankness and messiness without vulgarity
