A few years ago when I was scraping it together out of a basement apartment in Berkeley, someone ransacked a package I'd ordered that had the first new clothes I'd been able to afford in a year. Took what they wanted, left the rest strewn in the street. I cried all afternoon.
I've had so much other shit happen to me in the SFBA, but that one still sticks with me because it really hit me when I was down. As it turns out, criminals don't know your life story and do not give a fuck.

Crime as a social ill falls disproportionately on the poor and marginal. Imagine someone who has access to a locked parkade vs. a single mom who needs her car for work - and has to park it on the street in a bad neighbourhood. Many such cases.

What kills me is the old cars you sometimes see in rough SF/east bay neighborhoods with sheet plastic duct-taped over smashed backseat windows. You just know that there wasn't even anything in the car and whoever owns it couldn't fathom covering the outrageous cost of new glass
