half-baked funny thought: unbridled capitalism actually in a way forces society at large to confront various things it might have otherwise preferred to keep in the collective shadow forever, because people can make so much money off of fulfilling shadow desires
It recently dawned on me that part of the reason tech CEOs so often take pains to agree with detractors that their products make people less agent-y is that their customers *want* to believe that they are less agent-y when interacting with the product

Permission to blame the product for one's use of the product becomes a feature of the product, and possibly a critical one
