Lack of evidence argument, back then, fine, though precautionary principle still applies. Claims of harm or claims they don’t work were annoying to see! Exactly. The number of people trying to excuse Feb/March mask advice with "but we didnt have data, now we do!" is pretty disgusting. A few voices said "no data", but if that was the problem then every expert who said "masks are bad" was still being unethical.
So? People are wrong sometimes. Get used to it.
There is a continuum between honest mistakes, careless mistakes, and lies. Where do you think this "expert" falls?
Also great: the people in that thread saying masks are bad because they might make people less cautious. Sort of wild to see an anti-seatbelt argument repackaged as the "responsible" view without evidence.

While likely unmeasurable, it would be interesting to see if any claims, like this, made early on had contributed to the beliefs of the anti-maskers we see now. My guess would be yes.
