Reminder that @aetiology, an epidemiologist heading a lab at Kent State University, claimed in March that wearing a mask could *increase* your risk of contracting COVID. She later deleted those tweets. I assumed, wrongly, that she'd have the professional integrity not to do that.https://twitter.com/webdevMason/status/1244077211285479424 …

That document does not say wearing a mask increases your risk of acquiring COVID-19, which would be an absurd claim without some pretty extraordinary evidence.

Rest assured that I will never forget this, and as my following continues to grow I'll remind everyone that Dr. Tara C. Smith tried — at the burgeoning of a lethal pandemic — to convince people to not take basic, cheap precautions to protect themselves.

Lack of evidence argument, back then, fine, though precautionary principle still applies. Claims of harm or claims they don’t work were annoying to see! In the UK we had a TV Doctor laugh at a former model who correctly highlighted masks & success in Asia.https://mobile.twitter.com/carolecadwalla/status/1282799720105213952 …

Exactly. The number of people trying to excuse Feb/March mask advice with "but we didnt have data, now we do!" is pretty disgusting. A few voices said "no data", but if that was the problem then every expert who said "masks are bad" was still being unethical.

There is a continuum between honest mistakes, careless mistakes, and lies. Where do you think this "expert" falls?

Also great: the people in that thread saying masks are bad because they might make people less cautious. Sort of wild to see an anti-seatbelt argument repackaged as the "responsible" view without evidence.

While likely unmeasurable, it would be interesting to see if any claims, like this, made early on had contributed to the beliefs of the anti-maskers we see now. My guess would be yes.
