Really, what we'd all love is to be unequivocally in favor of Important Freedoms without ever having to confront the fact that people may then act freely in a way we don't actually like very much.
The good news is that we can usually find some way to convince ourselves that people *aren't* actually acting freely, thus avoiding any serious self-reflection or reevaluation at the point of cognitive dissonance. Whew!
Someone on here a while back walked a person claiming to be an absolutist to some principle through the implications of absolutism, and you could see with each tweet the dawning horror the “absolutist” was experiencing. People confuse extremity of belief with strength of belief.
I've had way too many people tell me to my face, earnestly, that it's only real freedom if people are acting X way or freedom only means freedom to do the correct thing as the speaker defined it.
