It's fine to be uncomfortable with the endgame for an extremely permissive sexual culture. It's also fine to be uncomfortable rolling it back. But this isn't about the algorithms, it's about you having your nose rubbed in your own "values." https://twitter.com/hunterwalk/status/1292104730181636097 …

You might think it's bad that there's a product that offers that, and that's fine. What I'm asking you to do is to be honest about the nature of your complaint.

The direction I see all this headed in, potentially, is that the sort of people who got their rocks off railing at religious institutions for "controlling women" will demand behind the scenes that certain female behavior be dampened on the algorithmic level "for their own good."

What I'd like is for us to drag these conversations into daylight and actually talk about what we want and what we don't want, without insisting that every mixed outcome of our preferred ideals is somebody else's fault.

Its almost like that desire is the result of millions of years of biological evolution and has very little to do with novel technology or something, weird.

I think people have dispositions to acquire certain desires, those desires are not necessarily acquired until some other sufficient condition is met: e.g. low cost access
-
I think algorithms rely on desire acquisition cascades to produce ever cheaper access to those goods, eventually triggering more dispositions and, in turn, generating a larger demand for that supply.

There's a difference between want and expect, no? Preferences, while molded, aren't set by "human nature." They exist in a two-way feedback loop with culture.

There’s a touch of the anti-porn discourse on the right to it, in which we reduce sexual expression to the most accessible and basic level and then, horrified, try to kick that expression away in the belief that doing so will restore what preceded it. But to build is not so easy.

Really, what we'd all love is to be unequivocally in favor of Important Freedoms without ever having to confront the fact that people may then act freely in a way we don't actually like very much.

It’s a wonder nobody’s thought of the innovation of *fully* unclothed yet. An algorithm doing that could probably really clean up.
