It feels like math vs storytelling. In the case of math, adding two units 1+1 equals two units, 2. In the case of the story, reproducing is not (math) addition, but a function whose results depend on a lot of factors. E.g. Twins aren't 1+1=4 but reprod(p1, p2, conditions)=4.
