IMO, the onus is partially on the media for being so cavalier about protest-related arson. This isn't a "boys will be boys" scenario. Don't set the streets on fire. It's not a joke.
Do I think 35 years is excessive? Yeah. But truthfully: it's not going to keep me up at night. You share your city with low-income families with little children, people sleeping rough or in their cars. It's not your playground. You don't get to set fires because you're angry.
35 years is the opening bid in the plea negotiation process. My guess is that neither one spends more than 5 years in.
The article says it's a non negotiable sentence.
10 years in prison is more than enough to teach them a lesson. 35 is excessive, but they most likely wont get 35yrs. It will probably be more like 5-10yr in reality. I have no sympathy for them. You don't firebomb things & expect it's harmless. It's a shootable offense
I immediately think of the fire bombing of dresden. Or the civil war. Obviously they were shootable offenses bc they could have been shot. but where do you draw the line for forgiving someone an offense or giving adequate punishment. Seems a very hard decision to make.

Jesus Christ American sentencing is insane. This is why you have 20x the prison population of any civilised country. That sentence is higher than you'd get for murder in NZ.
