      Well, I’m sure some of those who have lost loved ones consider them heroes as well. Most of the deaths have been the elderly. Long lives lived full of stories. Regular people are heroes, too

      Absolutely. I was talking about OP, a regular guy who happens to be a hero, though I’m sure he’d reject the label My point is it shouldn’t matter if you’re John Lewis, a combat veteran, or anyone else. Live is sacred, and we all deserve to live it and mourn its loss

      Thank you both for your comments here. Certain people have immense gifts, ambition, and perseverance that I think can be fairly rewarded with outsized influence, but that isn't what funerals are about. It doesn't call for an exception with regard to the celebration of the life.

      A man who raises his kids loved is more than enough. He becomes a central node in a network that will suffer tremendously for his loss, and funerals allow that loss to be distributed and shared and acknowledged. They're a timeless ritual for a reason.

      If we simply cannot have them safely, then we have to bear that together. Everyone. No exceptions. And if we *can*, we have to figure out how to help families have them responsibly.
