This is an interesting situation wherein even proponents of the drug are (sometimes, perhaps often?) claiming that dose and progression of illness are critical factors in determining whether it should be given at all, while still seeming overly zealous on its efficacy.
AFAICT, the claims made by proponents (recently) are that it should be given prior to hospitalization and as early as possible — and/or that it should be used prophylactically. (I don't believe there's a common claim that it will prevent illness vs. just making it tolerable.)
The Minnesota trial on post-exposure prophylaxis is pretty clear to me. I agree that pre-exposure prophylaxis hasn’t been clearly demonstrated.
