In SF, people are still not permitted to gather in groups of >12. Even outdoors. Even with full mask & distancing compliance. Even for weddings. Even for funerals. Whatever you think of the protests, they have *got* to be wearing down the sense of solidarity required for this.

Meanwhile, people who follow the rules can protect *themselves* from the virus, but at the cost of nearly every protective factor we've identified against the ever-rising "deaths of despair": suicide, alcoholism and drug abuse. And without broader compliance, COVID still spikes.

At this point, urban centers need to figure out what policy is sustainable on a timescale of *years* and start moving toward that. The days of "if we just do this for 6-8 weeks..." are over. Cities like SF got their 2 months of solid compliance and they largely squandered it.

Informed social responsibility & coordinated action >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> arbitrary, partial, sloppy government intervention. That said, I think the most disproportionately important time for a coordinated federal government, alongside war, is during a pandemic.

global problems require global, or at least federal (statewide) solutions. Localism is the way, but wrt global existential threats, we need to consider macro-variables and pay attention to the statistical threat analyses, and live our lives with risk-mitigating common sense.

this is me, right here. 25, recent college graduate, looking to eventually start my "real" adult life and career. No idea when the economy is going to recover enough to make that realistic tho. Maybe it'll recover enough within 10 years so I can start my career when I'm 35?? Lol

Everyone seems to be blaming the shutdown for the disintegration of the economy , but the reality is that there is no path for a return to business without a vaccine...who is going to the movies or a concert in the next year?

Regarding those new entrants, I've been wondering how this is going to affect intergenerational relations. We've been telling young people over and over for months that the sacrifices demanded of them are first and foremost necessary to protect the elderly.

A nice way to describe that is "kids protecting Grandma." A not-as-nice way to describe that is "Grandma is willing to sacrifice your life to extend what remains of hers." Worse things get, the more compelling the second version is going to be for people.
