think you're being a bit obtuse here. surely what they mean is "we would have many more people who are as fascinating and rad as hitchens in their own unique way" and not "we would have christopher hitchens but like 40 times"

Seems to be a tacit assumption that Hitchens was merely stating the obvious or simply broadcasting common knowledge - so if he didn’t do it, someone would’ve filled the void. That denigrates the uniqueness of his voice and reasoning.
