We don't talk about this much, but lobotomy was widespread and widely accepted within the living memory of older folks. Walter Freeman, the American doc who gained infamy for performing these on thousands of patients, lost regard when a woman died after her THIRD lobotomy.

Imagine. Just imagine swirling a human being's brains for the *third* time. If she hadn't died shortly thereafter, this practice for managing uncooperative family members may well have continued.

Every great modern scientific theory blew previous "consensus" out of the water. It was once consensus that continents didn't move, & that fire was caused by phlogiston. Consensus isn't even accepted as high-quality "evidence" in a fed court. It's only a bullying method.

An almost-off-switch may very well be what someone would want. The hope generally was that it would result in a submissive doormat (initially replacing an agenty and disrespectful person). Indeed this outcome did happen sometimes, so if a first try left something else instead…

people always had a thing for messing with the brain in weird ways from draining blood with cuts, icepicks to corpus callosum or taking out parts of the skull
