(One anecdote I hope it's okay for me to share: he mentioned that one parent who pulled their kid from a Prenda program did so because they seemed to be enjoying school too much, and the parent assumed this meant the program wasn't teaching enough.)

Remind me of my parents. They thought that only the strictest, meanest piano teachers could teach flawless technique. I went to a Russian instructor for years. I can't play piano.
This is a similar reaction to when people criticize homework for children. The attitude that the students are getting away with something and scoff at the idea that they could not be forced to do assignments that serve no valuable purpose
