I def agree re: grading of "overall covid handing to date" - NY/NJ should get low marks on that However failing students occasionally clean up their act, and it's worth acknowledging that "which states are currently dangerous/ trending badly" is valuable info
The analysis is constructed in such a way that it could be expected, a priori, to give strong marks to states that already infected/killed a huge % of their vulnerable population. NY is not some dramatically safer place to live than CA, even now. It's a crock.

Agree the media is misrepresenting overall performance, and should fix that Imo there should be a massive asterisk by any commendations recent performance in the northeast reading: "but also, they completely fucked it up in march/april, and ~100,000 people died as a result"

I would go further - “overall performance” is a silly thing to even talk about. When Cuomo is up for re-election in 2 years, we can talk about “overall performance”. What matters now is... what is Cuomo doing now? And he’s (mostly) doing the right things.

You’re wrong. It is. You can make that judgment based on outcomes - via case levels - or based on processes - via the infrastructure NYS has built out to suppress the pandemic - or based on people - via NY’ers current attitudes and practices. All of them show NY is much safer.

Serology tests don't support the claim that a huge percentage of the vulnerable population in New York have been infected/killed, and the daily new case count in New York is like 1/10th the number in California. Of course it's safer.
