There are weirdly studies and meta studies that show both outcomes. But they aren’t clear as to whether or not the infectious people were wearing masks or not. All seem to be done in healthcare settings too. Not sure if/how that translates to everyday life.
The study/analysis I think you're referencing was, sadly, trash. It was lauded as the gold standard because it was supposedly a randomized controlled trial, but the control group was so ill-defined that it was impossible to know what the interventions were even compared against
Control group was: "People just doing it how they do!" And a lot of libertarians are trotting that study out even though A) doesn't study mask v. no mask and B) demonstrates that non-woven masks reduce infection.
I think there was also one saying cloth masks are worse than nothing. But again, I couldn’t quite figure out what was actually being tested. And I suspect the value of masks is the keep people from spreading rather than preventing mask wearers from catching.
IIRC there were a few. There was some video of a covid truther going over the “masks are bad” studies and I poked at a few to see if they were any good. Then got sidetracked on exclusively trying to figure out who was spreading disease in them and never finished.
