That is the standard behavior in politics. Which is why politics is mostly dysfunctional. That is also why compartmentalizing politics from the rest of your life is a good idea. Keeps 90% of the bullshit out of important matters.
I think the fundamental rot at the core of our iteratively more dysfunctional culture is just dishonesty. We're meant to personally integrate explicit falsehoods with the expectation that they'll make us more ethical/likely to err in preferable directions. This. Will. Backfire.

Can you be a little more specific here?

Maybe something like aligning yourself with a status quo opinion about say, a cancellation or a social movement, and deeming it as something morally righteous, when the moral territory is blurry. If you iterate on this enough times and I can see why it wouldn't end well.

I suspect a lot of this comes from an activism mindset, where the end are seen as justifying the means, spreading through much of society.
