part of the problem is how easy it is to just live with falsehoods and it never come back to punish us. you can live in an alternate reality of lies and still be successful. we're finally paying the price for this type of thinking

I remember seeing a paper about this a few years back. Inaccurate models can win over accurate ones through being more efficient. At least until you hit an edge case where the inaccuracy cause problems

Like false order. Scaffolding to help support as the inner columns are built. But the inner columns deteriorated long ago. And now the scaffolding is covered in siding, and as the scaffolding rusts, all that’s holding everything together is some veneer.

I don’t think it’s intentional. Lossy compression. Messaging 101: bite-sized and unambiguous. Every position is quantized to one of two trending opposing options. The formats of communication that are accessible to the general public cannot encode truths.

Right, but isn’t it possible to produce variation in what the public can digest? I take Mason’s point to be that all strata of information processing can and have been on a negative trend.

It's a result of the distrust of reason/rationality that seems to have developed. We can't point out uncomfortable truth because it's (falsely) assumed we can't handle them—i.e. we can't act responsibly in response. So lying to each other is the only way to keep everything civil.
