Seems like part of what happened with TikTok is it was engineered (by China I guess) to remind people of other social apps that took off and greatly rewarded early adopters. The Times didn't want to miss out again.

TikTok is a beloved app - that was the point of the article. There only real issue with the article is not noticing that people like the app - that’s not in dispute. The issue is that the author somehow failed to point out the reason there’s a ban under consideration.
