(If they're incentivized to actually make good hires, which many aren't. "They can't blame me for going with the Harvard kid" is what drives a lot of legacy org hiring. Why? Because interviews are notoriously bad predictors of job performance.)

I’m not questioning that people can become experts on their own. I meant to say that expertise (should?) include “low-level” skills and knowledge, most of which requires practice and thus difficult to attain by reading alone.
