people are joking about murder *in his mentions.* search twitter for the word "guillotine." i've seen "kill the rich" in footage from almost every antifa protest this month. people should absolutely be anxious. a non-trivial fraction of our population is LARPing the purge rn. https://twitter.com/dansaltzstein/status/1275895890897702912 …

While obviously murder is wrong and no reasonable person supports it can you realistically engage in any degree of pearl clutching without an honest and fair minded appreciation of the degree of anger out there? You deserve your success but be honest about how broken it is.

If you find yourself beginning an argument with "while obviously murder is wrong," you are about to say something that sounds extremely tone deaf to people who have encountered actual violence and have serious safety concerns now.

People are indeed very angry. That's why they're making threats, and it's a good reason to be concerned about them. But anger is *at best* orthogonal to having a good argument. If you sympathize, that's on you; threats won't make your case for you.

violence of any kind verbal or otherwise is not ok. Ive made that clear and nuance is also key to a good argument. Empathy is also nice. Understanding why people are angry is usually a good start when healing rifts. Extremism is always stupid but in America is gets noticed.

If we're to be free people who have any sort of basic protections from one another, violence and threats thereof just cannot be how we start a conversation. This is how you become ruled by brutality, and the weakest — as they always do — will take the hardest blows first.
