On background is very common in reporting, becoming more so in political reporting. I think the controversy here is why Scott Alexander couldn’t be treated the same way sources are (why does he need to be outed?) if the story is about the rationality community, not solely SSC.
It's this — if there's a greater principle that overwhelms some minimum semblance of privacy necessary to protect a source *or* subject from demonstrably likely harm, it should look like something more than just the journalist's leverage or the media company's own self-interest.
Agree. And the NYTimes has this sentiment written into their guidelines for privacy. Which is why it doesn’t make sense that this case didn’t qualify. It also protects artists who are anonymous. It doesn’t make sense why his pleas didn’t qualify for protection.
