Vast majority of people aren't fired because the vast majority of people aren't noticed. If you're a typical employee, 100 people emailing your boss out of nowhere is going to be a huge problem regardless of the circumstances under which that occurs.
"Don't be noticed unless you're well-positioned to be noticed" is really the kicker, here. This is the novelty brought about by platforms like twitter. It's pointless to pretend we're still in the media/communications environment of 2000.
It's gotten better since then! A lot of my media friends now hold the cards and know it. They get to dictate terms. I still think future of media is personalities not publication brands. People matter more in a world of commoditized information. It's not easy but it's doable.
