That is ASTOUNDINGLY less important than the police reform legislation being debated in congress right now as there's no more riots (sorry that the discussion has moved on to something harder to take a stand on) + spike in sunbelt Covid cases. THIS is the distraction.

A healthy Academy is upstream of a lot of what makes society work, by growing. Eg fundamental physics -> semiconductors -> wealth creation -> wealth to redistribute. Police reform is awesome. Let’s just make sure to have it while not ruining the academy.

Honest question: Do most people think that defending folks accused of being communists in McCarthy era was effective use of social capital? Seems plausible, but also plausible that McCarthism was driven by larger societal forces and best strategy was quietly riding out the storm.
