They'd already ID'd him, perhaps Uber + summons to appear? Of course that could mean liability if he did something bad later, so tough to balance net risk/harm. Still, I'd rather decouple how to deal with DWIs and the use of lethal force in this specific case and ACK it's tragic
If you're still intoxicated and you've been caught driving, it's arguably in the public interest that you not have any more opportunities to do something stupid until you've sobered up. If you start applying this case-by-case, you're asking to be accused of bias.

Generally agree. There are risks to either approach, & comparing counterfactuals without data is tough esp. w/ less quantifiable costs such as "less trust b/w LEOs & the community" & "chief resigns." Extrapolating your point to when LEOs are applying lethal force case-by-case...
It doesn't make any sense to "extrapolate" anything from a routine arrest to use of lethal force, and it invites a lot of pointless and stupid arguments about who "deserves" to die. It's exactly these kinds of strained associations that warp the conversation beyond repair.
I'd bet that at a certain blood alcohol level youre coherent enough to know that if you had just gotten a hefty ticket and had your license temporarily revoked — that 99% of people would go home very aware of how bad they fucked up. So maybe there is a BA level that can be ID'd.
