I often say "you are what you do," but you're actually the *interpreter* of what you do. You're both the reader and the stand-in character of a story told by your choices & actions. This can make you incredibly vulnerable to people who control your social or physical environment.

Part of me is skeptical because this implies that the People’s Liberation Army has psychologists whose results replicate, and it’s a really compelling narrative and source of obvious funding for psychologists in a country where we probably do not have that technology available.

This seems like an argument in favor of performative morality to me. People fake being moral to gain social status, and then actually become more moral as a result. What's not to like?
