In case it's not obvious, I'm not writing off their behavior. I just think it's easy to forget that mental illness, physical neurological damage, nasty attitudes, traumatic experiences, impulsive and/or reckless personalities & genuine bigotry can all coexist in any combination.

A person can do chronic and/or extreme harm to another person and simultaneously be extremely vulnerable themselves. "Ruin their lives, take everything they love" is obviously not the way we, as a society, respond to every kind of terrible behavior.

many people live in a constant state of fear feeling as though they have no control over the course of their lives, and so seek whatever tiny control they can exert on the world
-
another perspective is that many people have done everything they’re ‘supposed’ to do and they’re still deeply fundamentally unhappy, but dig deeper into what’s ‘supposed’ to happen to try to fix it

I lay on the ground, blood pooling around me. I think of my dreams of the future, I think of my most cherished memories. And at the end I also think: wow, I hope people don't blame Karen for her hysterical racism purposefully causing my death, she seems cognitively disorganised.

If you reduce the Karen meme down to its most base form, you’ll realize that the people who use it most often aren’t attacking a type of person. They’re attacking Order. They’re mocking the idea of attempting to maintain a higher standard.
-
Of course there are the irrational/crazy ones, but imo the increasing popularity of the meme is being used in a way to undermine the ideals of those oriented towards higher standards and order. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but that’s what I think when I see it.
