I don't think that twitter is the problem — or, more precisely, I think twitter is an instantiation of a technology we won't be reboxing, and shouldn't abandon even if we could. I do think we *need* to have more tools to protect ourselves from mobs that can coalesce within hours.

Good fences make good neighbours. It's very hard to construct a fence on Twitter, and thus very easy to wander into a foreign neighbourhood without realizing it.

Neighbourhoods exist but without explicit boundaries they keep trying to enforce their parochial norms on every neighbourhood they come into contact with.
