Some years ago, just about everyone (myself included) was concerned that too many walled gardens on platforms like twitter would further erode a shared perception of reality necessary for cooperation en masse. We imagined that accessibility to one another would encourage niceness

By the time someone complained *to my employer* that *a bot I had written* had retweeted something racist, I had begun to see that this heterogenous experimental utopia may actually be a fucking trashfire

I don't think that twitter is the problem — or, more precisely, I think twitter is an instantiation of a technology we won't be reboxing, and shouldn't abandon even if we could. I do think we *need* to have more tools to protect ourselves from mobs that can coalesce within hours.

Apropos of Shirky (https://www.gwern.net/docs/technology/2005-shirky-agroupisitsownworstenemy.pdf …), the most striking thing about Twitter's social media design is the complete absence of any warren/plaza division (https://www.ribbonfarm.com/2010/10/27/warrens-plazas-and-the-edge-of-legibility/ …). It's all just one stream. Not even Usenet-like divisions or blocklists.

This is why I want to create a Meta-Internet layer. Websites can just be dumb unfiltered databases, and people would subscribe to the coalitions and features of the Meta-Internet they like. The main draw would probably be the downvote button on all content, including twitter.

I have only seen the meanness to others, I follow few and have few followers, and what i read is enough to agree this is a dumpster fire. It was more fun when it was just me and my tech "bros" chillin and sharing cool stuff, but now I'm back on IRC doing that. IRC > Twitter.

Digital secession now! Unironically living in an echo chamber is sometimes the better and more pleasant option. We aren't ever going to be friends, why not let us peacefully if each other?

I made a script for blocking everyone who likes a tweet. I'll eventually re-make it for the new Twitter.

Maybe I entered a Luck Bubble but I haven't encountered any meanness Counter: my following is small. As followers increase we encounter a greater variety. Loud Meanness is more representative in memory because we forget all the "thanks for sharing this" responses. Conf bias

I do have a ton of reddit experience (and Forums before then) and meanness was prodigious. Doubt it's a twitter thing.
