It seems to be a pledge to shut down normal operations for a day and use that time to take tangible action. I don't think that amounts to a symbolic display to, "kill it," so much as an effort to turn words into action.
I don't know what you think "shut down" or "symbolic" mean. But I'm betting it's way easier for you, broadly, if they don't mean much of anything.
