It seems to be a pledge to shut down normal operations for a day and use that time to take tangible action. I don't think that amounts to a symbolic display to, "kill it," so much as an effort to turn words into action.

This seems like a hyperbolic characterization of what the movement is about. It's not trying to end science – it's trying to get scientists to take further steps to include more black people, which would probably strengthen, not weaken, the scientific project.

For people who haven't clicked on the link, ShutdownSTEM seems to be asking people to take one day off of normal activities to plan/do workshops geared toward more racial inclusion. There are suggestions aimed at people in different roles. There is no request to end science.
