It's a privilege to feel safe w police. Speaking as someone covered by a criminal protective order against a man who's threatened to rape, torture and kill several women in the bay area, please remember that it is also a privilege to feel safe in a world that "abolishes" police.

tbc I'm not actually sure the resulting equilibrium of privately produced assassination threats, insurance agencies guaranteeing investigation and retaliation after your death, etc, is actually worse than the present equilibrium.
my guess: any protection service within a stone's throw of affordability for me would sensibly require me to stop tweeting and probably stop writing publicly altogether at this point, I *might* be able to crowdfund a no-fucks-given bodyguard, but I wouldn't bet on it

Policing is way cheaper than you appear to think, in the hundreds of dollars per person per year. Cut out the war on drugs and armoured cars, and there's no reason private policing isn't just another insurance line item.
