This is such a random book rec, but I have a feeling you'd *love* the "The Lore and Language of Schoolchildren". Compilation/exploration of the creative day-to-day life of children in 1900-1950's UK. Features funny schoolyard traditions, the various ways kids rhyme/swear/bargain

This is helpful in my current quest to talk myself into continuing home schooling my kids in the fall.

I wonder if the cost effective solution is smaller rations for fewer years. I think my kids would get a better education if they had 4 years in classes with ratios of 10 to 1 than 12 in ratios of 30 to 1.

Amazing thread. I graduated from a very small school, graduating classes average 20 students (steadily declining). I remember being thanked by a teacher in elementary school for testing well & helping keep my grade’s average test score up.

Yeah, that's awful. So many systemic issues preventing success. Kids are so curious, teaching them should be easy (most of the time). And we waste so much to get such lousy results.
