Isn't this most of classic children's literature?
A lot of it was built around families, which made it difficult to relate to if you were an only child or came from a dysfunctional/abusive family. Harry was an entry point for everybody
Idk, i think a lot of classic children's lit actually featured dead family members or replacement figures for their actual parents pretty often lol (peter pan, mary poppins, a little princess, etc.)
Getting the parents out of the way in MG is important because it lets the kids be their own characters and make their own decisions. Whether it's because the parents are dead, gone, or just busy with work, etc. Kids need the freedom to save the world or the story won't work.
