FWIW: I think this is one dimension along which many somewhat left-leaning and somewhat right-leaning folks can find themselves aligned, and I hope they do because this is the one I really care about

YES. Nickelodeon has always been extremely good about this even going back to Hey Arnold and Rugrats. Shows about kids solving conflicts for themselves in a world where the adults might mean well but have too much baggage of their own to be a source of stability.

I always found it troubling as a teenager, that other teenagers in the story wouldnt attempt more, ahem, creative uses for some of the magic elements.
