Like, OK I'm the Big Bad Anti-Homeless one, are you giving any thought whatsoever to what happens to the homeless when the city genuinely can't do payroll for a bunch of its... less eccentric public services? Or are we just sort of "meh" about the homeless a year from now?

Meanwhile it's exceedingly unclear that the more vulnerable homeless folks are better off isolating in hotels alongside known exposures in quarantine vs. being given tents in open outdoor areas with strict supervision around distancing practices

Instead we have an absurdly expensive and at least somewhat risky hotel stimulus program + an explosion in high-density tent encampments in the Tenderloin so startling that neighborhood orgs are suing the city for essentially leaving them for dead

What would be a reasonable estimate for costs to the city if there were an outbreak in the homeless population?
-
There already are such outbreaks, to the point that all “navigation centers” are known or presumed to have infections.

My experience talking with homelessness advocates is that they genuinely don't think it's right to trade more suffering for current homeless to win less suffering for many more in the future.
-
Maybe there's a consequentialist steelman for this position re the uncertainty of future reductions in suffering, but not one I've heard explicitly stated.

There's definitely a case to be made that the city has built a soft-and-fuzzy social brand for itself while funneling those people into the Tenderloin and SOMA where its most vulnerable housed populations wind up dealing with the consequences of drug abuse & serial violence
