I'm suspicious of "niceness" in certain contexts, often because I'm picking up that a particular conversation isn't about sharing ideas but about testing the threat detection system of a somewhat fluid zeitgeist; "nice" is not play, it's showing the teeth without the growl (yet)

As I've been watching the political poles debate back and forth lately I've thought about this too. In my experience, both sides exhibit the facade as well as they are impotent in their anger, should it show. I'm most concerned about the audience who eats it all up, however.
