If you're working/middle class, whether you're better off under lockdown or a largely open economy has everything to do with specific circumstances — age, current health, access to financial assistance, housing security, etc. It's not the no-brainer it is to people with a buffer

IMO we do have a responsibility to take reasonable measures to protect our neighbors, too. But when people are looking at losing everything they've worked for & becoming homeless, retiring penniless, etc. it's not clear that advocating for extended lockdown is advocating for them

It's important to notice that if the difference between a 1-month lockdown & a 3-month lockdown is financially trivial to you, there are many who'll weather one & not the other, facing consequences so far removed from your own reality that you never even think to worry about them

e.g. Have you considered stealing, selling illegal goods or selling sex in order to make some money? Have you considered staying with a potentially dangerous person in order to have a place to sleep? There are people who will have to consider these because they cannot work.

fwiw I was (and continue to be) an early advocate of short-term lockdowns as needed to control hospital overwhelm, but the week-over-week cost to the most vulnerable doesn't merely grow linearly, and we have to respect how much we're forcing onto these folks' shoulders
