California is closing *all* beaches and state parks My guess is that whatever demand currently remains for outdoor time is largely sanity-preserving & inelastic, and the effective result of this will be funneling crowds into a much smaller number of remaining public green spacespic.twitter.com/ZewMdJ403F

There are extensive cautions mentioned in that article that aren't being followed in this pic from Saturday though.. unless everyone hanging out under the umbrellas is only doing so with their quarantine partnerspic.twitter.com/7HR5ZhDqyA

You don’t need a full closure to prevent crowding, though. They’re going to spend a bunch of resources enforcing a full closure that could be spent on capping occupancy. And many beaches outside cities are almost completely deserted.

Yeah, I think a much better solution would be to section beaches + green spaces and monitor/regulate density. However bad this looks, it's going to be much, much worse when all of these people are seeking out a dwindling number of outdoor spaces that remain open

Definitive thread on the science behind keeping outdoor spaces like parks and beaches open. It is fairly counterintuitive and widely researched area unlike a lot of other areas related to our crisis. California is moving in the opposite direction https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1247546543051345926 …

That picture is doctored. It was taken with a telephoto lens to make the crowds look more compact.

Newport Beach could have easily regulated the amount of people that went to the beach. They actually have security post and blockades in their parking lots in order to prevent entrance and Orange County beaches are fairly small compared to others like San Diego.
