To be fair, that is a long honored tradition in science.

this is the use of occam's razor in the context of science; we can entertain the very complex idea but if we do we also need to explain the complexity aliens would be an unprecedentedly complex explanation with many many 'whys'.
-
the aliens explanation would at the very least require that we need to figure out how we missed fundamental properties of physics. the less complex explanations are the ones that assume we didn't and this is a phenomenon we can explain in those bounds

feeling fairly confident that it's not aliens is just being prudent, not close minded no one has any idea what's being recorded; why should this one particular explanation be privileged over literally any other?
-
I didn't say it was aliens, and that's sort of my point the introduction of aliens into the mix immediately fucks up anyone's ability to offer weird ideas to explain **even a profoundly weird observation**, because now everyone needs to distance themselves from "the crazies"

This is the key weakness of all humans including scientists: social influence. Hard to be objective!

The moment you dismiss all explanations that include axioms incompatible with the sensibilities of the times you are no longer a scientist.
