There's an underappreciated semi-partisan divide over whether it's broadly more useful to move money/resources toward small things that are working or big things that are failing

To put a finer point on it: if you can effectively deploy cash or labor to fix broken institutions that have already scaled, it clearly makes sense to do that — scaling is hard. If you can't, well... a trashfire can presumably burn infinite cash

I always think of money as just an accelerator. The steering comes from feedback loops, which tend to be very dampened or non-existant in larger systems.

I’ve had this struggle at Twitch many times. It turns out sometimes your big important projects really are just under-resourced and when you give the failing project more money and people it succeeds. But probably more often, it just gets worse. Not simple tho!

I think your diagnosis is generally spot on and very prescriptive. Obvious caveat being it’s nothings binary, fix what you can fix and grow what you can grow

1) Unless option A and B purport to solve the same problem it's a bad criteria for investment. 2) Something broken can't be fixed with investment alone, we need to know how to fix it. 3) What's working may have scaling limits. Additional growth may break it.
