in terms of our entire generation being ~ showered with participation trophies ~ 1) i don't actually remember that being the rule. 2) when i *was* given a participation trophy i don't remember ever thinking "wow, i won!" and finally 3) you idiots gave them to us, blame yourselves

I suspect our generation was actually pushed into a lot of competitive activities we knew perfectly well we weren't suited for, more the satisfaction of the adults around us than for ourselves
frankly we've gotten to take it from both ends, first with "you're going, it builds character" and then with "I suppose you expect a ribbon for showing up"

this may come as a shocker but the typical child does not actually enjoy publicly humiliating themselves and then having to come back to take their booby prize

Yep, kids gauge perfectly well their place in various hierarchies, even without overt competition. This can be sad - as in life is sad - and pretending it's not on both ends is just plain shitty and anxiety compounding.
