It's rarely if ever noticed by pro-worker advocates that compulsory schooling produces, at high cost, totally fungible labor w/ zero leverage. There's no real reason that every grad doesn't have one of 100s of trainable trade skills to fall back on after 12 years in state schools

You cannot effectively make someone with a few years of genuine apprenticeship under a mechanic (for example) take $8/hour to do a miserable job. Yet nobody suggests that we make sure young people have an option like that; we inundate them with busywork that actively prevents it

Goes hand in hand with the view that academia is for people and trade school is for statistics I've seen so many kids flat out forget that trade school is an option when they're trying to figure out what college path to take, even when they don't care about college

My HS had a vocational track and funneled to the county level starting Jr/Sr year. Half day at HS/other half at vocational school learning a trade. For kids not going onto college, this is a lifesaver for higher wages in future. Successful. Should be replicated on National level.

In general, we've woefully undervalued skills that allow someone to create value without a large bureaucratic organization. That's fine when everyone's hiring, but it limits optionality.

All high schools should have a coding program like @treehouse, a writing program like Write of Passage, and a program that teaches basic technical skills like woodworking, electrical, home maintenance, etc. These programs should last all four years of high school.

I work in automotive. Every guy I work with except the youngest ones owns their own home. A good friend of mine(mechanic) bought his first house back in 2011 at the age of 23. That guys younger brother is a plumber making about 150G a year. Neither have 1 dime in student loans.

Plenty of people throughout the world today find a way to educate themselves without resorting to a system of compulsory secondary schools, that all too often resemble prison.

Absolutely. The world has too many people for the amount of valuable work as the system is currently constructed. More beneficial to have them do nothing.

You could if taught everyone in America those skills. They themselves would be low paid, except to the extent the great mass of people can’t learn them. Supply matters too not just demand when it comes to skills.
