This points at a broader, semi-nebulous concern of mine, something like... a general comfort with extreme political sloppiness when it seems justifiable on the terms of the extant voter base

I think I know what you mean. I’m unclear whether it’s comfort with sloppiness, or simply sloppy people raised to power over a system which they do not fully, or in some cases even partly, understand. The difference between knowing and reckless mens rea, if that makes sense.
