It was only a week ago that the CDC started recommending we cover our faces when we're out. 2 weeks ago an epidemiologist was telling me people shouldn't wear cloth masks because they might *increase* the risk of COVID. I want to know how to put skin in the game for expertise.pic.twitter.com/jTnnGc4NHE

That does seem to be the thrust behind Mason's recent tweets on the topic -- sowing distrust of experts on the basis of common sense and a moralistic attitude. But the whole point of academic experts is that they should be wary of advising anything that hasn't been proven.

I see the normal process: "We can't prove masks work, & we have evidence they don't work. Therefore we classify them as not effective, & advise against them." It's the traditional skeptical view, not a Bayesian one. It's much more robust against false + but prone to false -.

This is spot on, but it's even more extreme than a traditional skeptical view. A rational skeptic may not recommend wearing masks due to unproven effectiveness, but these pseudo-experts are advising *against* them based on anecdotes ("I saw people wearing them poorly, ergo bad!")

The report she linked did not conclude that cloth masks increase risk and, barring alternatives, cautiously recommended them. I don't think she read it. Likely she was relying on a very poorly designed & heavily criticized RCT that was making the rounds.https://twitter.com/webdevmason/status/1246590252535300097?s=21 …

I mean, here's how I'm reading this study: 1) throw out the control group; it's genuinely worse than useless as described — for all we know, they always wore a medical mask in close contact with the sick 2) conclude that medical masks work better than cloth masks — makes sense!

"Trust experts" is a tribal meme, just like "distrust experts." Nobody should be terribly surprised to find incompetent people with PhDs or highly competent people without them. Academia isn't a particularly strong filter.

it's kind of funny that old cotton t-shirts and bandanas ended up being more useful filters than the doctorate-issuing universities what a savings!
