The only reason we are in this situation is insufficient societal focus on technology. The virus would be a trifle with better diagnostics, vaccines, drugs. Find it, shield against it, kill it. Like every other predator that has ever come after humans, from lions to polio.
The men who developed penicillin literally had to sneak lab equipment, years after the antimicrobial activity of the penicillium fungi had been demonstrated. The history of science is a story about jigsaw pieces yet to be fit into place. We need less cynicism, more eyes scouting.

Without being quite so harsh (ha) what I do want to say is that even if we don't find a safe vaccine, we are almost guaranteed to find many therapies that will help. It's just a lung infection, nothing unheard of.
