Delivery companies are aligned with restaurants, here. They both want to keep restaurants in business and demand + delivery volume up. A cap on fees per order doesn't do any good if you don't have enough orders to keep the kitchen open. @LondonBreed, do your *own* job, please.

Here's what this is. Restaurants are hurting. There is just not as much demand for takeout under lockdown as there would be for restaurant meals otherwise.
@LondonBreed knows she can't fix this, so she's doing policy theater. It may kill businesses faster, but who can prove it?Show this thread

biggest costs for restaurants (besides employees) isn't delivery app fees (which admittedly are very high), it is rents. but landlords have significantly more local political power than tech companies ... even in SF.

If you didn't think you could run peoples/businesses affairs better than they do themselves - why would you even run for office in the first place?

The role of govt (solve collective action problems, etc) vs private enterprise is well-theorized. What we’re seeing here is one side stumbling into the other. I dunno what you’re implying.

The restaurant industry seems to be aligned with the mayor on this one.https://sf.eater.com/2020/4/3/21207395/postmates-uber-eats-doordash-commissions-fees-delivery-coronavirus …

free delivery is not the same as fees charged to the restaurant. My understanding is that they charge the restaurant up to 30% of the cost on each order even if they don’t charge a delivery fee.

In my area, they jacked up prices. So your personal experience does not reflect the true reality of the situation. She’s a gov official, doing gov work. People pay taxes spesifically for this reason. Gov is a glorified insurance company. Time to pay up now

She fails to mention that the fees are passed onto the consumer. A “pass through” If you will. Most if not all consumers of these services are very well aware. Don’t forget to digitally tip!

Maybe I’m uninformed, but even if Uber doesn’t charge us, they still take a slice of the restaurants sale, right? Wouldn’t that help the restaurant and only really hurt Uber?
