Lockdown can't persist until a validated treatment or vaccine. I take COVID very seriously, and I don't think it's reasonable to pursue herd immunity. But we need to start seeing some solid proposals for the next phase of the war.

Ubiquitous/freq testing so we can react the way we shelter from hurricanes. Open economy wo will disproportionately impact ppl w less access to health care, low air/water quality, blue collar (lots of white collar co went WFH before lockdown & will prob maintain that optionality)

Sorry, hard disagree on this one — neither our economy nor our psychology are built to weather rolling lockdowns, it's a recipe for simultaneous supply chain destruction + increasing noncompliance

Testing is highly highly overrated. Don’t know if this would work for the US but...https://twitter.com/thepericulum/status/1247025694066032641?s=20 …

My solution (for Canada): Slowly lift restrictions beginning in May. Require everyone to wear masks in public. Advise people only to get tested if they are over 50 and have severe symptoms. Limit mass gatherings for the rest of the year.

Portions of our economy are thriving (streaming, several software companies)..by economy I specifically meant more service/labor type work. I don’t see a path wo rolling lockdowns&green areas before vaccine that isn’t irresponsibly putting vulnerable more at risk

Re-opening economy before vaccine w/o a plan for testing/protection/quick reaction if a community is at risk of outbreak is disproportionately damning to those most vulnerable in society who don’t have white collar optionality to WFH, access to health care, air/water quality etc

Does it have to manifest as rolling lockdowns? If we really get a handle on the virus and have sufficiently widespread testing, can we use testing+contact tracing to quarantine only infected/likely infected people?

Yes exactly how frequent & ubiquitous testing would be the way out — eg if everyone tested themselves in the morning, could know if they were a risk and stay home, reducing R0 on individual level. If there is an outbreak, then lock down a radius that would overwhelm medics
