I'm not confident enough to be against it, but I'd look at it more like military service than a no-brainer. Permanent damage to the lungs and/or heart are real possibilities. You'd very plausibly be trading end-of-life years for cash or civic duty.

It's a small consolation, but as infection rates creep up (hopefully slowly) under containment, the size of the gap to herd immunity shrinks. So there is a kind of de facto, slow-motion herd immunity that we move toward even if we don't come up with something better.

I don't see this as a good thing, necessarily; I think there's a decent chance we're clipping some life years off the median person >40 years of age who catches this and recovers. But it's inevitable.

Ubiquitous/freq testing so we can react the way we shelter from hurricanes. Open economy wo will disproportionately impact ppl w less access to health care, low air/water quality, blue collar (lots of white collar co went WFH before lockdown & will prob maintain that optionality)

Sorry, hard disagree on this one — neither our economy nor our psychology are built to weather rolling lockdowns, it's a recipe for simultaneous supply chain destruction + increasing noncompliance

universal face mask use + mandatory/enforced quarantine for symptomatic people, contacts of those testing positive and people coming in from abroad + testing (viral nucleic acid+serostatus) / contact tracing seems to be better than US-style lockdowns given experience in HK/Taiwan

"do what Taiwan does" seems to me like a far better approach than most of the unproven coronachan theorycrafting on this website if only because like,,,,,Taiwan gets results IRL.
