My first thought: never talk to a "journalist" without recording the call and making it clear that you have the right to publish the recording.https://twitter.com/webdevMason/status/1247199014627315712 …

One of the most egregious things I've heard from journo world, straight from the subject: they recorded an interview for over an hour; the journalist took a sentence fragment from the first half and another from the second half, then strung them together to get the money quote.

If that sounds too aggressive, consider shortening it to "Never talk to a journalist."

They're not even great distribution channels anymore. Seriously, give your story to a twitter/instagram "influencer" or wrangle your way onto a solid podcast. Larger audience that's more loyal, leading to a lower risk of being misrepresented for virality

Journalists make their careers by hanging heads on the wall. Until someone fully understands that, they'll never be able to prepare for an interview.

Oh c'mon, I'm sure you are aware of many journalists that have or had good careers and they didn't do that. I agree with you about the incentives but that generalization isn't useful.

How would I know? What I see are bad systemic incentives and no system for rooting out predatory goal-directed behavior. The prevalence of that behavior is a total unknown. Do you have special information?

I don't have any special information, only from following the careers of some journalists. Obviously I can't know what is not in the work but the way assertions are justified and the care for the language give information about the process. Any health that this system has is due/

If you think you can look at a quote and determine on the basis of the eloquence/coherence of the language surrounding it whether it was actually said, you're either unjustifiably naive or possess cognitive powers far beyond my own

Probably the first one but I'm not referring to quotes. For example, the work that Pamela Colloff did for ProPublica on the Joe Bryan case seems careful in the way that justifies the evidence that brings to the reader. Again, I can't know what was edited out.

(I'm aware that I'm putting myself in an easier position because I just have to give exceptions to a trend.)
