Not against gun ownership at all, fwiw. But I consider it an intense decision, like owning a wild cat or venomous snake. Get some training, acknowledge that you're creating some serious risk even if you're potentially mitigating it elsewhere

You don't need like a "class" to learn about guns. I got my first .45ACP semiautomatic pistol when I was 12 years old. It's not that intense of a decision. I was modifying firearms by the time I was 15.

Again, not against gun ownership, but I've never had one and still sustained the loss of one partner and one step-parent to suicide by gun. Not the fault of the guns, but the reasonableness of having one during a period of crisis is extremely contingent on other factors
